I also love Blindness, until the guitar, keyboard and Himself start up, the bass and drums are the foundations of an excelent song.
Also, can someone who lives a bit nearer give him an actual slap for this: "That groove cuts so deep...it makes me light headed". You fecking hippy, you wanna go sit a sway your head with them Eagles fans on your school bus.
Its the 'making you light headed' bit I was refering too, not the Groove bit, you big Jessie. No wonder my work took you off the firewall filter with poncy statements like that.
Anything ANYTHING John Peel recommends is worth a listen. I will have to give these songs a few plays to "catch the groove" or "get into the groove" as that puffy-faced wretch of a harridan Madonna would intone. Often the best way to be introduced into the music of a band you don't know is for someone you trust to play their favourite tracks. I remember a friend of mine introducing me to Funkadelic / Parliament on his awesome separates system. We'd smoked a funny cigarette - I know that's not a particularly clever habit and the shame of such a youthful indulgences is tattoo in inky permanent shame upon my soul - but it blew my mind.
And if Adam dances to the beat of a different drum, say Cliff Richard at his hight in the late 70s/ early 80s, I for one will not stand in judgement just as Pontius Pilate would have done.
Yet another bizarre turn...how can you, quite rightly, revere the late great John Peel...and not be aware of the Mighty Fall??? The relationship between Peel and The Fall is legendary...the man owned more records by the Fall than any other act and nobody made more appearances on the show.
Between you and Adam....this is flabbergasting. It's like you've stopped in for coffee at Pappa V's in Tupelo and found yourself having to defend Elvis from one joker and explain to another who he actually was....and the second fella's just told you that if Col. Parker was a fan than he must be alright.
See I get a cold fear when someone mentions John Peel, I get this feeling that though I'd try and want to, it was gonna be as imprenetrable to be as them pants of Cliff's were tight, and the too cool for school kids would deride me once more. It have always had this sort of problem, I wanted to discuss and participate in music discussions and such, yet liked the 'wrong sort' of music to discuss it with the crowd that had the sort of debates I was interested in joining.
I hear what you're saying. Why didn't I twig the Peel connection? In my defence, are you familiar with Ned's Atomic Dustin?
http://youtu.be/yan77UKYcg4
One of Peel's favourite bands, I only know their name because they're local to where I grew up. Not a fan, desperately mediocre in my opinion. But Peel played them all the time. Are you familiar?
All I can say is things can slip through, okay, I'm sorry! Not the face! Please!
I'm gonna get a pair of those...for a new blog header.
You are in a safe environment here...we like to get rowdy about it around here but, if we judged people on their taste in music...our beloved Allan would be facing a perma ban.
Plus, we aren't really that cool anyway...we don't really have the juice to put other people down...much as we might like to.
In an odd sorta way...there may have been a group of us (and by us I mean pockets of kids in every city and town in the US in the 80's) that had their ears pressed harder to British soil than our parents did in the 60's.*
Punk, New Wave, MTV**...we were pretty obsessed.
*Thankfully I have one parent that came up in the 50's.
**Never one to let a chance to pimp the state pass...the creator of MTV was born right here in Jackson and is a Millsap Major like yours and Dr. Allan.
"Telling that Adam equivocates on the matter of Cliff as Rock saviour or Anti-Christ."
Apathy and ambivalence are probably the harshest judgement I have to level Nat. Not proactively obviously, but in a way, its probably worse that I don't care.
Neds Atomic Dustbin, I can still see it written in tippex on Matthew Hopkinsons satchel! Once again, I was furiously listening, wondering why they all thought it was awesome and yet to me it just sounded like shit. To be fair, I haven't heard one of their songs for over 15 years, they are probably alright.
3 colours red were another one that were lost on me, especially fatal round here 'cos Keith Baxter (drummer- died 2008) was a local Morecambe lad (he was also in Therapy?) and his older brother runs our local.
I can only remember one real conversation that was an attempt to convert me...I just remember thinking there wasn't that much to it.
I think of more than a few bands that, seemingly I alone, didn't care for....Sebadoh (dinosaur Jr could be untouchable but this whiney little *****...), Guided byVoices (bob pollard would have given his left to have written Born to Run).
One other thing...a point that don't think I've ever explicitly made....
these bands that we've discussed, The Minutemen, Pavement to an extent and certainly the Fall do not belong in these too trendy for you categories. I don't have any time for that **** either.
Yeah, had a re-listen, shit is probably too strong a word for Neds Atomic Dustbin, its just 'meh' really. I found this comment on one video: "fuck I miss the 90's. great music, great drugs, great friends" I guess that sums it up for him, and sums him up for me. *predjudice hat on* I could probably find him stoned listening to waterfall or loose fit on any given day circa 1994. Jump to conclusions, me? Never!
I think the 'too trendy for' catchall I used, still works for me, but then again, its my subjective label for 'that sort of music'; i.e things die hard music fans love and rave about, which between the speakers and my ears, largely turns into inpenetrable jagged weirdness.
Certainly I'll concede that the intents of the groups themselves shouldn't nessecarily be attached to this description, at least thats what you were arguing about the minuitemen being sincere, and I have no real reason to doubt it.
Bu they evoke, at least to me, the same reaction as the Fall, and various other groups. In that they form some of the benchmarks of the 'quality of your taste', used by others to see if you were a 'real' muso.
Most likely the cynicism I have towards some of your/their/the, conversations about them, probably merely comes from my utter inability to link the words and terms you use to describe your reaction and emotion to the music, with mine.
Hey whats that a 0.46, never heard that one, thats a Fall song that doesn't get on my nerves!
ReplyDeleteContainer Drivers... got it, s'alright that one!

Groove...as in dirt floor, Po Monkey, jUNIOR'S jUKE JOINT...GROOVE. A Grocery Groove...not Groovy.
ReplyDeleteRemember where you are suuuuhn...White People never got in here.
I shouldn't say never...Mazes does post from time to time.
ReplyDeleteMostly never.
Its the 'making you light headed' bit I was refering too, not the Groove bit, you big Jessie. No wonder my work took you off the firewall filter with poncy statements like that.
ReplyDelete*Adam favourite Fall song if you please
Poncy as charged then...that beat's like a heart attack.

Everyone knows Cliff's a little bit rock 'n roll.
Belated warning: what has been seen cannot be unseen.

Y'all are killing me.
:)
Enjoy.
P.S. I just cut Turn This Mother Out off when I parked the car...they get a lot of play in these parts.

You can always score points here with Roberta Flack references.
ReplyDeleteRoberta Flack, now there's a name I ain't herd in a at least a decade.

We'll give Em an airing and see what's what.

That's the over arching point.
I've had a listen.
ReplyDeleteHere's what I've got to say about ned's atomic dustbin....NO!
Although I'm a little surprised that you aren't at least neutral on 'Em.

This conversation needs a fresh approach. I think there is still something to be got out of it and fun to be had....but we need a different angle.
ReplyDeleteOh god, your not going to make a video again are you :-O
ReplyDeleteThe only thing saving you from one now is my inability to upload one from this pad.
ReplyDeleteIt's coming.
