Yee Haw! Enter the 80's.

Look what I found yesterday... Photobucket I'm almost certain I got this as a present for my 7th birthday. That was the only real birthday party I had as a little kid. It's still got a lot of the pieces too. Photobucket Stuuuupid cops. One of the clearest memories I have from early childhood is seeing a commercial for the premiere of Dukes of Hazzard. There's a couple of reasons it sticks out...one, I was at a friends house. He had a toy spaceship from Battle Star Galactica. It was an early one that shot plastic missiles. Recently a kid had choked to death on one of these missiles and the toy had been taken out of production. This was the horrific discussion, stamped forever into my six year old brain, that our parents were having when the commercial came on. The commercial momentarily wiped that out...and we come to the other reason why this moment sticks out...and replaced it with sever disappointment. I had heard there was going to be a show called Dukes of Hazzard and I had convinced myself that it was going to be a show with Knights and archers like Robin Hood. Crushed. It didn't take long to get over it though and of course, I loved the show. How could you not? I Am Somebody! I found this in the same box...Ha. Photobucket It had to be from a few years later...but, it's definitely early 80's. This is the flippin elementary education I received. Understand, I don't have a problem with Jesse. He's a con artist...and you can't hate the player. If individuals and corporations allow themselves to get got...that's on them. In full disclosure, I should point out that I have shaken the man's hand. It was in Indianapolis. It was in a hospital where Maze's mother worked and Jesse was going through the halls shaking hands.* "Mahh Frrrriendah"...that's what he said as he reached out to grab my hand. Sweetest of all...I was wearin' an Elvis T-Shirt that had a Confederate Battle Flag as a background. I bought the shirt at a leftwing hangout...a punk rock record shop...obviously a different time. Blueeeeeeee.....Orrrrrrrrrrrrange...Blueeeeee.....Orrrrrrrrrange! Then there was this...my true obsession then as now... Photobucket If you look closely you can see a Bulldog being swept up in a Blue and Orange tornado. It's hard to explain just how much I hated the Georgia Bulldogs at this time in my life...almost as much as the Seminoles but, the Gators were beating FSU like a drum at this time. Georgia made clowns of 'em every year. Obviously that was long time ago...b****es. The only actual art teacher I ever had was at Sable Palm Elementary. I'm not positive but I think her name was Ms. Robertson. She had red curly hair and glasses. She was always in a checked shirt and faded jeans...and nike tennis shoes. She was cool and even at that age I remember thinking she was young..and she was compared to the other teachers I had. She had a turn table in the class...always the Lovin' Spoonful. I actually learned things in that class...at least I remember things I was told in the class. For instance, did you know that the reason why many portraits from early American history are so goofy lookin is because they were done by house painters trying to stay busy in the winter? I don't know if it's true or not...but, I remember it. She was great and like I said...the only real art teacher I ever had. Anyway... *This was the same week that Mike Tyson was charged with raping a lady in Indianapolis...there was a Black Expo or something going on there that week. I'll fix the pictures later. If anybody knows why the new blogger won't recognize paragraphs that would be helpful too.

  2. I can't help thinking CHiPs had the stronger social message.

Though this crime-fighting duo could never legally consummate their love for each other, they still saddled the gas-soaked leather each week and hit highway to fight crime, Village People style.

Battlestar Galactica has, IMO, one of best sci-fi TV theme-tunes ever (FACT - check your Fact Manual for confirmation):

  3. "Murder She Wrote" makes Dexter look like an underachieving serial killer - ever clock the abnormally high statistical correlation (above which one would normally expect to occur) between a domestic visit from Jessica Fletcher and a death - or two - in immediate family or wider social circle? It's almost like she's taunting us; yet, in all these years, she's never been in the frame - legally fingered so-to-speak - of course, though, ironically, as the star of the show, she was in the actual televisual frame for most of the time. Something to ponder, or not, as the case may be.

  4. Ponch and Jon were like Enos and Daisy...only more star-crossed for reasons that are as obvious as they were oppressive.

    2. And she never grows old, does she? My great fear is that, when I reach sixty, I will start to find her undeniably hot – does that count as necro-romancing? Certainly one of the family of crimes suffixed by “philia”.

Perhaps I let you in on more than you may care to know?

    4. We may have to revisit the idea of turning this place into a matchmaking site.

  5. "Gators for Garters" is the working title for the treatment I'm currently in talks with over at HBO. The premise is pretty simple: a team of transvestite football players each week has to solve a reptile-based crime and still time find time to make practice before the coach gets suspicious ...

    1. Film it in Tallahassee and you can make it a documentary. You might have to work on the title but...the story should write itself.

  6. I love the Dukes of Hazzard too, but I'm guessing my love has a lot more to do with Beau Duke's sweet arse than yours does.

  7. Oh I envy you your art teacher recollections - she sounds great! I also love, and am most impressed by, your early artworks... especially the blue and orange tornado...fabulous! And I'm sure I can see here the origins for your 'Allan' series, yes...? :-)

    1. Thank you ma'am.

She was great...but, I paid for it with every other art teacher I had. We'll talk about that...and how it relates to the origins of the Allan series.

    2. Well, sadly, seeing as my favourite subjects and the only ones I was ever much good at were Art and English, I didn't have one good Art teacher for my entire time at school and college (until college part-time, second time around a few years ago) and only one good English teacher just before I left... Art was never taken seriously as a subject and I think the teachers were just killing time until they could get to the pub, and all but that one English teacher seemed to think they were in competition with the pupils and thus dishing out any kind of praise or encouragement was seen as some kind of failure on their part! (And yet they still remain my favourite subjects, so perhaps it's not all bad...)

Will look forward to hearing more about yours anyway...and the Allans...

    3. For me it was History and if it's possible myHistory teachers were even worse than my Art teachers...until I got to college.

I actually liked high school. I liked hanging out there...loved playing football and golf but, I hated class. So boring.

I had matchless professors in college...and that made all the difference.

  8. We didn't have TV all through the 80s, so my knowledge of the current T shows is sadly lacking, EF.

As far as new Blogger is concerned, did you write this offline and then cut and paste, or write it straight into the New post box? I understand that new Blogger doesn't take kindly to cut and paste, though i haven't yet made to move to test that out. I may even end up going over to the enemy, aka WordPress.

    2. No and No. :-)

As far as WordPress is concerned, at least I actually got a reply to a query from a real person once, which is more than Google ever does. My worry is that Google is trying to push bloggers into Google+ and this blogger doesn't want to go there...

    3. I've tried to figure out the Google plus thing but, as with all technology, I'm struggling.

I still don't even know how to make links in a post....I'm hopeless.

    4. EF, are you a man or a wimp? Links are EASY! If I, a rising 66year-old woman can do them, so can you. :-) On your New Post toolbar, to the left of the 'Insert image' button, is a button marked Link. Click on it and do what it tells you, then click on OK. Go on, try it. You know you want to.....

You just wait...the links are coming.:)

  10. Daisy Duke, was as close to porn as a 7 year old could get. I have a foggy memory of that day meeting Jesse. I remember not liking him then and still don't. He reminds me of the pied piper leading the mice. Or just to any network camera man he can find to sell his snake oil.
