Green Peanuts and Brown Bananas

Among those that know me...I am known for self control and restraint. Master of my appetites, I am a paragon of sobriety...typical Southroner.

Having said that, there are two things I am powerless to resist...and I gorged myself on them this weekend.

One is boiled peanuts...

I will eat cold boiled peanuts until they run out or I pass out.

Then there's banana pudding...

and the less we say about that the better...people from my church read this blog.

Besides...what more could be said after this.

We've talked this bunch before...the trashier little sister of the B-52's who was given a bottle half full of corn liquor and a copy of Cracker Culture for a pillow but, otherwise neglected and left to her own devices.

A reader set me off on this jag by mentioning something that had nothing to do with Southern Culture on the Skids on her own blog. You know who you are...Kibber.

Perfectly Southron weekend.

*While looking for a picture of a peanut stand I came across an article in a new york paper encouraging people to eat boiled peanuts. The author called it strange...then said it was strange again to boil peanuts..."unlike the traditional roasting." It would be like me saying it IS strange but people in Japan use soy beans to make a sauce. Not that it may sound strange to us where peanuts have little to no impact on our culture...it IS strange. Morons.

  1. I'm quite pleased to have prompted your SCotS train of thought! It may prompt me to pursue my own current Man or Astroman one...

I've never met a boiled peanut , but would love to try...and as for that banana pudding, I just know we'd get along....

    1. ...only if you got taste buds.

I wish I had a picture of the trifle bowl Martha put together but it weren't around long enough.

Boiled p-nuts...better than potato chips (crisps).

      Let's hear it then.

  2. So you admit you are cheating on your wife? I was informed that your banana pudding picture wasn't from her kitchen.

    1. First of all pictures ate not cheating.

Secondly, why don't you ask mrs. Martha when was last time she made banana pudding for me. Do I have to get pregnant to get my own bowl?

    2. She was nice enough to let you have the last two pieces of her pizza last week. And that was the best pizza in the world. She sounds like a pretty good wife to me.

    3. So we've quietly moved on from Martha's scrumptious homemade nanner pudding and ont some pizza I can drive out to Clinton and buy...and eat without the boy first picking all the pepperonis off?

  3. Ohh that banana pudding... I must take care not to dribble on my keyboard here, it's making me hungry. How do you eat it - hot or cold? What's the topping - cream? ice cream?meringue? What about those little sprinkly bits? And is that sponge or biscuit layers? This could descend into dirty phone call type territory if I'm not careful....

    1. Cold...or even better room temperature. The topping is the pudding (specifically pudding...not general pud)its mixture vanilla/banana pudding and whipped cream.

I'm glad y'all can't see my face right now.

Then cookies (biscuits if you like)usually Nilla wafers but, Martha makes it with Chess Squares...and sliced bananas.

Of course, if you can let it sit for a day it's even better. If you can believe it.

    1. I am now more suspicious than ever of this family you worked for...no boiled peanuts? You couldn't have been more than 30 minutes from Picketville...no banana pudding?

  6. Banana pudding is pretty much my specialty. I get requests for it all the time and I just sigh, pretend to really modest about how awesome my pudding is, and then accept the multitude of compliments.

I'm disturbed by those boiled peanuts, though. Not gonna lie.

    1. Hey Ms Lorraine...good to see you pop up around here.

I don't doubt your pudding prowess for an instant...and keep playin' those chumps.

You know Little Debbie cakes are the focus for much of that last video and song...Camel Walk. There's even a recurring oatmeal pie.
